Young Scientists Kenya (YSK) Bootcamp

February 17, 2020 @ 8:00 am - February 21, 2020 @ 5:00 pm

In order to leverage the efforts that have been inculcated through KSEF, the Young Scientists Kenya (YSK) model was introduced in July 2017 with a recommendation of a pilot project.  YSK in partnership with the Ministry of Education and other partners including the French Embassy, Kenya started a pilot project by working with a total of 82 secondary schools, 82 teachers and 184 students from 10 counties who presented their research projects during the National Science and Technology Exhibition that was held on the 5th -6th July 2018 at Kenyatta International Convention Centre. The theme of the exhibition was ‘Making STEM Education Accessible to All’. The highlight of the exhibition was the attendance of H.E the President of the Republic of Kenya as the chief guest during the opening ceremony where he agreed to be the Patron for YSK and also directed that YSK be rolled out nationally in 2019. He recognized that investing in science and technology is fundamental to the development of innovations which can advance the country society and improve the lives of the people and that the YSK initiative targets Kenya’s greatest resource – our young people.

The result of our 2019 efforts was a landmark event from 3rd – 7th August 2019 that brought together over 450 students from over 160 schools exhibiting 233 projects. Our Patron, H.E. President Uhuru Kenyattagraced the opening ceremony and was pleased that YSK was rolled out to all 47 counties this year, as per his 2018 directive. The Award Ceremony was graced by H.E. the Deputy President, Dr. William Ruto.

Post the National Science and Technology Exhibition

There are not many initiatives that are targeting the conversation of scientific research into successful commercialization. Most end at the exhibition level and do not provide the young people with opportunities for commercialization.YSK would like to select successful projects and conduct a 5-day business boot camp training for eligible projects. Many of the 233 projects are potential small micro enterprises which could grow to large scale industries to provide employment to the young people in the country. This is the pathway of growth that is envisaged at the end of the business boot camp. The students will be assisted in learning about the fundamentals of business and how they might be supported in translating their YSK project into a viable business enterprise, including having individualized workshops on how to patent and protect their innovations legally.

Acknowledging that good research work is already being done in Kenya, there is need to focus on taking the research and creating businesses out of it. Our ecosystem for converting scientific research into business has not yet matured and through this process, we hope we shall provide examples for others to learn from.

We expect this programme will encourage further innovation from the young scientists and provide the students with commercialization skills to carry forward into their future careers.
